For billing counters and TPA desks

Hospital package billing software that bills a surgery as one agreed package, across every department.

A package quoted to a patient covers theatre, room, drugs, investigations and the surgeon. HIMS lets you define what sits inside the package, bill it as one line, and still see what each department actually delivered underneath.

What package billing has to solve

A package is a promise made before the admission: one agreed amount for a surgery or a course of treatment, whatever the individual departments end up charging. The difficulty is that the hospital still runs on departmental charges. Theatre, room, pharmacy, laboratory and the consultant each post what they did, and somebody has to reconcile all of that against the single figure quoted to the family.

HIMS handles both halves at once. The package is defined with its inclusions, so when the admission is created against that package the bill shows one line to the patient. Underneath, the departmental postings are still there, which is how the hospital can see what a package actually consumed and whether the inclusions are still sensible. Where a TPA covers part of it, the approved and patient portions sit on the same bill.

The other reason to keep the detail is the claim. A package billed to a TPA still has to be supported by documents describing the admission, and those documents come from the same record the postings came from, which is what stops the bill and the claim telling different stories.

Where packages leak

A package quoted in the OPD becomes an argument at discharge.

The family was told one thing. The bill was built from another.

Nobody knows what is included

The consultant, the counter and the family each have a different idea of whether an extra scan sits inside the package.

Departments bill anyway

Theatre and pharmacy post their charges as usual, and the counter strips them out by hand at discharge.

Extras added silently

Items outside the package accumulate during the stay and appear on the final bill without warning.

Package and claim disagree

The TPA is billed a package rate while the supporting documents show itemised charges that do not match.

No idea what a package costs you

Because the detail is discarded at billing, the hospital never learns what the package actually consumed.

In practice

Four situations a package bill has to survive.

A planned surgery

Workflow: The admission is created on the package, theatre and pharmacy post as usual and the discharge bill shows the package line.

Result: The family pays what they were quoted.

The stay runs longer

Workflow: Days beyond the package are shown as an explicit extra rather than folded in quietly.

Result: The conversation happens before discharge day.

A cashless package

Workflow: The approved amount covers the package and the balance is collected on the same bill.

Result: One bill, two payers, nothing reconciled later.

A quarterly review

Workflow: The hospital reads what each package consumed across the period from the postings underneath.

Result: Inclusions get revised on evidence.

Questions

Package billing, answered.

Can we define our own packages?

Yes. Packages are set up with the inclusions your hospital agrees: room category, theatre, consultant, routine drugs and investigations. They are configured during setup and changed later as your practice changes.

What happens when the patient stays longer than the package?

Days and items beyond the package appear as explicit extras rather than being folded into the package line, so the family and the counter are looking at the same thing before discharge.

Do departments still post their charges?

Yes, and that is deliberate. Theatre, pharmacy and laboratory post as they normally do, then the package resolves what is included. The detail stays underneath so the hospital can see what the package consumed.

Does package billing work with TPA claims?

Yes. The approved portion and the patient balance sit on the same bill. Pre-authorisation, enhancements and claim documents are handled in TPA and insurance billing.

Can a corporate panel be billed a package on credit?

Yes. A package can be billed to a company on credit, and the outstanding sits against that organisation. See credit and corporate billing.

How is GST handled on a package?

Billing in HIMS is GST-native and tax is applied to the services and items where your accountant says it applies. The rules are configured at setup. Treat this as a billing capability and let your auditor decide the treatment itself.
